Masataka Taketsuru was the first Japanese person to learn the authentic techniques of whiskey distilleration in Scotland. Searching for a nature-rich environment with a climate similar to Scotland, he opened his first distillery in Yoichi in 1934. Today, the distillery features a whiskey museum and the home in which Taketsuru and his wife Rita lived in is open to the public. Visitors can also take tours of the distillery. The tour shows the major facilities from those used for the drying and distilleration of the barley, the barrels, and storage.
