Meidai Nigirimeshi
A handmade rice ball specialty shop open 24 hours underpinning the bustling Susukino area
The famous Nigirimeshi is a handmade onigiri (rice ball) specialty shop that is open 24 hours, located in one corner of Susukino Market. You can eat in or order takeout. The shop is busy at all times of the day. During the daytime hours a wide range of Sapporoites drop in, including families, while at night patrons include workers from around the Susukino area and people looking to have a snack to cap off a drinking party. Shio-nigiri (salted) is perhaps the most classic form of rice ball, but at Meidai Nigirimeshi you can also choose from shoyu-nigiri (soy sauce flavor). Both pair perfectly with any ingredient. Definitely try the cod roe butter, which is the most popular, in shoyu-nigiri. The novelty salmon butter and saba toro (mackerel, available in shoyu-nigiri only) with its sharp kick of wasabi are also quite popular among repeat customers. In addition to rice ball, the shop also offers prepared foods, hearty tonjiru (pork miso soup), oden, and other homemade Japanese favorites.
