Half marathon popular among Sapporoites of all ages
October 6, 2024
The Sapporo Marathon, started in 1976, is the largest civic half marathon held in Northern Japan. Every autumn some 15,000 runners participate, making it one of Sapporo’s largest and most famous sporting events. The half marathon and 10 km run are both official courses sanctioned by the Japan Association of Athletics Federations. The courses start at Makomanai Park, and the half marathon turns back at Odori Park in downtown Sapporo. Both courses follow the banks of the Toyohira River on the return leg, with the finish line located at the start location of Makomanai Park. There are also 5 km, 3 km and 2 km courses within Makomanai Park. The 2 km and 3 km “Fun Pair” race matching runners with children (pre-elementary school age) are also popular draws. Beginners are welcome, so there are many grandparents who take part to run alongside their grandchildren.
