Sapporo Children’s Puppet Theater “Kogumaza”

Japan’s first public dedicated puppet theater, located in Nakajima Park.

Opened in Nakajima Park in 1976, Sapporo Children’s Puppet Theater “Kogumaza” is Japan’s first public theater dedicated to puppet shows. The building’s humorous exterior was designed by leading Hokkaido architect Yoshiya Tanoue. Together with the neighboring Nakajima Children’s Hall, Japan’s first public children’s hall, it is a theater that has been supporting Sapporo children’s culture. Every weekend (every day during the long school holidays), puppet shows are put on for a low price, and infants may be taken along to the majority of performances. It is OK the children shout or are a little restless during the performances, so you need not worry. Many of the puppet show performances are under 60 minutes, so feel free to drop by. After the show, you can enjoy a stroll through Nakajima Park.
